If you ask ten climbers what makes someone improve, you'll probably hear the same answers: climb more, project harder, and spend more time on the wall.
While climbing is the most important way to improve climbing performance, it isn't the whole picture.
Strength training fills the gaps that climbing alone cannot. It builds resilience, increases your capacity to handle more climbing, and helps reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Perhaps most importantly, it allows you to keep showing up consistently instead of constantly taking time off because something hurts.
Let's break down what strength training actually means and how climbers should approach it.
Strength training is simply the practice of improving your body's ability to produce force while maintaining control of your movement.
The goal is to develop a stronger, more resilient body that supports climbing performance.
A good strength program should help you:
Climb more often with less fatigue
Recover better between sessions
Increase your overall movement capacity
Reduce injury risk
Get more quality attempts during a climbing session
One important thing to understand is that improvements in the weight room do not immediately translate into sending harder grades. You may not notice your climbing skill changing overnight, but over months and years, a stronger body gives you a much larger foundation on which to build technical skill.
One of the biggest mistakes climbers make is performing the same exercises with the same weight every week.
Your body adapts surprisingly quickly. Once it becomes comfortable with a training stimulus, progress slows.
This is why strength programs gradually become more challenging over time, a concept known as progressive overload.
You can progressively overload by:
Increasing weight
Performing more repetitions
Adding an additional set
Increasing exercise difficulty
Improving movement quality
Most strength programs work well for about 4 to 6 weeks before adjustments should be made. If you've stopped making progress, it may be time to increase the challenge or change the program.
Not every strength workout is trying to accomplish the same thing.
Whether you climb first or lift first depends on your current goal.
If climbing performance is the priority, complete your climbing session while fresh and perform strength work afterward.
If building strength is the primary goal during an off-season block, strength training may come first or on a separate day of the week.
The key is making sure your gym workouts support your climbing rather than leaving you too fatigued to enjoy it.
Your training should change throughout the year.
Focus on:
Building strength
Increasing muscle mass
Correcting weaknesses
Maintain what you've built by:
Reducing strength training volume
Leaving a few repetitions in reserve
Prioritizing climbing performance
Every few months, schedule a lighter week.
Deload weeks reduce accumulated fatigue, improve recovery, and prepare you for the next training block.
Given the unique nature of climbing, which involves holding your body weight from your finger tips mixed with extreme lower extremity moves like high steps and heel hooks, there are unique exercises to train these demands.

Climbing skill will always be the biggest driver of climbing performance.
Strength training is there to support that skill, not replace it.
A well-designed program improves your ability to train consistently, tolerate higher climbing volumes, recover more effectively, and stay healthy over the long term.
